The EdgeWater 280cx is the largest of EdgeWater’s impressive dual console boat lineup, and for boaters looking to get out in the open water more or just need more space for a larger family, the 280cx doesn’t disappoint. The dual console market attempts to marry the best features of bowriders and center consoles and remain excellent choices for the boating family that intends to get on the water and enjoy a wide variety of activities.
In Florida, center console boats remain popular with the deep-V hulls and outboard engines. And while the hardcore fisherman may still opt for the center console, more and more boaters are giving the dual console crossover category a more thorough look before purchasing a boat. In recent years, dual console boats have increasingly met demand for a “do everything” sport utility vessel.
The crossover boats take the rugged hulls and performance from the center console category and match them with incredible versatility enabling the boating family to experience a wide range of water activities and comforts while out and about on the water. For the family seeking a boat to suit a range of activities, the dual console option is tough to beat.
The EdgeWater 280cx
Hop on the EdgeWater 280cx and you’ll immediately see how versatile this boat can be. With the fishability built into its features, it’s not hard to imagine being out on the open water fighting a trophy catch. Similarly, it’s also easy to envision spending the day with the family wakeboarding or soaking up the sun while beached on a sandbar. With the EdgeWater crossover line, you don’t have to choose between fishing and family-friendly fun.
With any EdgeWater, it starts with the “unsinkable” deep-V hull, built with the company’s proprietary “Single Piece Infusion” (SPI) construction process. EdgeWater’s build process results in an impressive strength-to-weight ratio and a hull that can handle nastier conditions. Powered by Yamaha engines and technology, the fuel efficiency is also quite impressive.
When compared with the smaller 262cx, 248cx and the 230cx, the EdgeWater 280cx’s distinguishing feature is the cabin down below. While it can get cozy, you can sleep two adults onboard the 280cx – a capability not found on many boats in this size range. The cabin features 6’8” of headroom, a galley and a head with electric toilet.
Let’s talk fishing. While the creature comforts are notable, no discussion about the EdgeWater 280cx is complete without talking about the fishability. You’ll find rod holders on the transom, port and starboard gunwales as well as on the hard top. On the transom, you’ll find a bait prep station, livewell and an ice box (can be configured for a second livewell) that can be used for frozen bait or cold drinks. The 65 square foot of cockpit space can be configured wide-open to give you plenty of space for fighting the big catch.
Or, the cockpit converts quickly to plenty of fold-down seating to enjoy conversation with friends and family. On the portside, an additional jump seat sits above a cooler. On the starboard side aft of the helm, an electric grill and refrigerator are great for entertaining. The transom walkthrough is ideal for watersports and swimming.
The forward seating area has comfortable seating with plush bolsters for support. The area can be configured with additional cushions to create a full sun pad. A cooler at the bow makes grabbing drinks quite convenient.
The seating at the helm deck allows easy standing or riding while the boat is running for both the captain and the passenger. The arm rests are a nice touch.
Storage and access to the necessary compartments is quite easy onboard the 280cx. A transom hatch gives you quick access to the battery switches. In the cockpit floor, a storage compartment is perfect for stashing your water toys. Access to the pumps and fuel filters is also simple.
You can rig your 280cx with twin Yamaha 250-hp or 300-hp engines. Top speeds will exceed 50 mph. The boat has a length of 28 feet and a beam of 9’6”. The boat weight is approximately 6500 lbs. Fuel capacity is 200 gallons.
The EdgeWater 280cx is a perfect vessel for all-day cruising. Whether your goals for the day on the water are fishing, diving, wakeboarding or just cruising with family, the boat handles each well and transitions between each activity with ease.
